This article aims to examine the First Moon walk – a world event in July 1969 – via its coverage, as it happened at the time, and the anniversaries or commemorations of the event 10, 15, 20 and 40 years later. The study is based on a sample of journalists’ copy, located in the Paris archives of Agence France-Presse (AFP), so as to identify the written production processes in the reporting of such an event. The various angles of successive anniversaries are highlighted in order to monitor journalistic practices in covering commemorations of an international news story. The analysis furthers our understanding of how news is selected within AFP and the changes in media coverage of a given event over time.
