The interest of the Spanish Enlightenment Press in the international information : El EspÃritu de los mejores Diarios que se publican en la Europa (1787-1791)

To what extent was the Spain of the Enlightenment, which is also that of the Inquisition and of the double censorship (firstly by the state, and then by the Inquisition), open to international news ? This paper shows how at least some Spanish newspapers contributed by the end of the eighteenth century, helped relay such news. We analyze the editorial strategy of the EspÃritu de los mejores diarios que se publican en Europa (1787-1791), a newspaper which, both innovative and daringly, managed to seduce the public. It was reduced to silence in 1791, as the authorities feared the contagion of the ideas of the French revolution.
