The Republic of Males : Political Masculinities in the Media in France (1980s-1990s)
Le Temps des médias n° 36, Printemps 2021.From the virility-privilege, virilityresource dichotomy theorized by Catherine Achin and Elsa Dorlin from the example of Nicolas Sarkozy, we wish to study in this article the mutations of male political identities in the 1970s and 1980s. The hegemony of virility-privilege, dominant since at least the founding of the Third Republic is jostled by the emergence of a claimed and displayed virility symbolized in particular by the muscular and sporting figures of Bernard Tapie and Jean -Marie Le Pen. Beyond these singular personalities, this discourse more generally permeated the political leaders of the time, to the point that lack of virility became a resource for delegitimizing an adversary. Even so, the hegemony of privilege-virility if it is discussed remains unchanged at the center of power.
