Although France’s democracy nominally guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of information, the civil and military administration controlled, as best it could, information made available to the public during the Algerian War. It could not contain, however, the impact of the revelations by a small number of French soldiers, which opened cracks in the official version of events. Initially marginal and little heard, the soldiers’ voice grew stronger, received increasingly more media attention and reached a peak with the confessions by General Aussaresses. DrapeauFrancais
