“Near yet Exotic” : Love in an Agricultural Climate

The French TV reality show “L’amour est dans le pré” (“Love in the fields”) has for six years served as a platform for matchmaking between single agricultural workers and their suitors. Its premise is the articulation of love narratives with the representation of an agrarian lifestyle ; this has rarely been depicted on French television. This article argues that the confrontation between agrarian and often urban suitors results in an interplay between both distance and proximity in representations of love in an agrarian milieu.
