Les figures de l’explorateur dans la presse du xixe siècle

Le Temps des médias n°8, printemps 2007, p.57-74

Symbolic figure of a relationship of Europe to the world at the end of the XIXth century, the character of the explorer is the product of a media construction. Almost ignored by the first generations of the illustrated press, he becomes in the learned newspapers of the first half of the century a craftsman of the resolution of geographical enigmae or a martyr of the science. From 1860, the Tour du monde forges an imaging which dramatizes the exploration, and the popular press of which to big edition declines then scenes-type to illustrate the colonial conquest.
