Hollywood finances

Le Temps des médias n°6, printemps 2006, p.129-142

Who funds Hollywood movies ? What is the rate of return on investment ? In the beginning, pioneers blazed the trail of the US cinema. After the Great War, Finance took over. From the 1930s to the 1950s, a « Hollywood system », in which studios controlled the distribution circuit, took shape. In the 1950s and ‘60s, anti-trust legislation forced the studios to cede control of the circuits ; the « system » declined accordingly and major multinational companies, concerned with maximising rate of return on investment, with marketing as the key strategy, took over the industry.
