French newspapers in Turkey: a medium for the Revolution’s ideas

Le Temps des médias n°5, automne 2005, p.168-176

In Turkey, the first newspapers to be published were written in French. Later on, they would become bilingual and, eventually, newspapers in Turkish would appear. As a consequence, in the course of the past two centuries, Turkey has had more than seven hundred newspapers written in French. In the beginning, the French press of the Ottoman Empire mostly served the purpose of spreading the ideas of the French Revolution and it seems legitimate to affirm that the phenomenon is closely linked to the creation of the Turkish republic in 1923.
