An amazing Couple : the New Wave film-maker and the movie censor

From 1956 to 1966, the relationships between New Wave filmakers and censors were highly conflictual. Indeed, New Wave directors depicted love and couples in a way whose transgressional aspect will be pinpointed in this study. To do so, extracts from a selection of films is juxtaposed with the justifications given by censors for the cuts and changes made to them. A statistical approach complements this analysis. It turns out that a dispute about new depictions of love did indeed take place, but that the hostility between censors and filmmakers has been overplayed.
