Witnessing the War during the years of Censorship in France, 1914 – 1918

Le Temps des médias n°4, printemps 2005, p.50-62

During the First World War, governments across the world used censorship with the aim to manage public opinion – euphemising, at the very least, all terms that referred to the reality and brutality of the war. This article’s investigation into the French state machine during 1914 to 1918 renders a complex picture of the production and circulation of words and images. The photographic and cinematographic testimony left by recordings of popular music and performances in Parisian cabarets and music halls, largely unpublished, provides a novel perspective on the Great War.
