From 2007 onwards, when the issue of climate change started to be dealt with by governmental policies (“Grenelle Environnement” in France), the media have granted more importance to this political dimension. As this article demonstrates, far from being a “politisation” of the global warming issue, this movement could be understood as a process of “depolitisation”. Indeed, a political debate is not enough for a question to be politicised : if the debate is confined to people sharing the same ideological background, it merely belongs to a conservative dynamic. The issue raised is therefore that of an “objectivation of change”. This case study highlights how a symbolic political treatment of an issue can hide social continuities.
