Centered on the figure of the “automedia”, this article aims to question the social reality covered by this function from the point of view of the actors who claim it, but also in terms of perception among the journalists who work alongside them. Located in the field of media coverage but also in that of activism, the automedia must be re-located in the social dynamics that allow it to happen. From this goal, the article proposes to return to the historical transformations of the journalistic field and the mutations of militancy which allow the appearance then the persistence of this original figure. Then, it examines the representations on the subject of automedia, basing itself empirically on the work that we have conducted on the subject of media production of the opposition to the Sivens Dam on the Internet. Thus, the article supports the idea that “being automedia” amounts to occupying a complex role, between dominated position within the journalistic field and tortured militant identity.
