Former Neapolitan minister during the 1848 revolution and imprisoned afterwards, Carlo Poerio becomes one of the most famous European political celebrities in the early 1850s. He owes this sudden notoriety to a broad mobilization of the foreign liberal press, attached to present him as a martyr of the transnational cause of political freedom. Mainly focused on Great Britain, Belgium and Piedmont- Sardinia, this campaign reveals at the same time the relevance of people diplomacy and the emotional and religious features of politics in mid-19th century Europe.
