During the 1980s and 1990s, the main communication medium for IT and computing enthusiasts was the plethora of professional and amateur publications dealing with programming, offering advice on technical equipment and reporting on a rapidly growing industry. This article sets out to examine the concept of print-based socialisation by analysing the various opportunities for public participation (writing programmes and games, letters to the editor, etc.) that these publications offered before the advent of the network era.
