Témoignage, propagande et espace littéraire. L’exemple d’Espagne, Espagne ! de Jean-Richard Bloch

Le Temps des médias n°14, Printemps 2010, p. 73-84.

Jean-Richard Bloch was not predestined to participate in the defense of the Spanish Republic against Franco’s rebellion. In spite of his admiration for Cervantes and his repeated trips through Europe and Africa, the neighboring country remained to him unchartered territory. Yet, in 1936, his involvement with the French Popular Front has him sent to Spain, missioned to establish the necessary assistance to its counterpart. From this experience comes a book of emergency, Espagne ! Espagne ! where the author describes the impressions gained during his trip, and where he doesn’t hide where his sympathies lay. Focusing on a text that is all at once travelogue, reportage and essay, our analysis aims to observe how all these styles rub, mix and mingle to create a reaction among the French public.
