Reconfiguring imagery : audio-visual experiments by Jesuits at Lyon-Fourvière after the second Vatican Council (1964-1974)

Le Temps des médias n°17, Automne 2011.

In the Lyon-Fourvière training centre, young Jesuits set up an innovative audio-visual project after the second Vatican Council. This project is examined here in interaction with the policy of the second Vatican Council in the field of the media. Seeing the audiovisual media as the main vector of a new vision of the world, these theology students were led almost involuntarily to question the apostolic mission professed by the Council. Torn between the positions of the latter and their refusal of all religious propaganda, they reshaped their practices in the field of the media to such an extent that they initiated a new means of expression for their community thanks to video.
