In 1998-1999 British TV documentary was shaken by the revelation of several ‘fakes’ which caused the audience to distrust the medium, programmes and programme-makers alike. The relationship between facts and fiction on television was to be questioned again. Through a study of the events, factors and consequences of the crisis, this paper shows how complex are the codes defining the reception of factual television – more than a set of rules, a matter of trust established between the genre and its audience.
