Mobilized against gender pay discrimination. INA documentalists on strike (November 1981)

Le Temps des médias n° 34, Printemps 2020, p. 73-88.

In November 1981, documentalists at the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA) went on strike for three weeks, which profoundly marked the history of their profession. By stopping work, these strikers, who were almost exclusively women, blocked access to archive images and sounds which largely illustrate audiovisual programmes. The INA documentalists’ strike is based on explicitly feminist demands. In the light of interviews and unpublished archives, this article aims to retrace the issues at stake in this mobilization, which takes place in the particular context of the post-election of François Mitterrand, and the greater visibility of women’s struggles in the media.
