The debate over smallpox vaccination, during the seocnd half of the 18th century, went well beyond medical schools and became a controversial topic in the public sphere. This article focuses on the campaign led by well-known scholar Charles-Marie La Condamine, and its reception in five literary journals, which take a firm stand when at the core of the debate is the legitimacy of physicians as the sole authorities on matters of health.
