With the Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) recently stripped of its power to name the chief executives of public TV and radio networks, a history of French broadcasting authorities seems a timely venture. This article shows that media independence relies necessarily on such regulatory entities, and that how well they operate depends as much on their nominated members as it does on the character of the individual by which they were nominated.
