To guard against the risk of accusations of racism, television comedians are able to signal the intended meaning of their jokes through the representation of model audiences. The different ways in which this technique can be used are explored here through three case studies. Two of these – Smaïn and Patrick Sébastien – concern professional comedians, while the third concerns former Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux.
