The archives of leading international news agencies - Thomson-Reuters (located mainly in London), The Associated Press (in New York) and the French agencies - Havas, OFI, and AFP (in Paris) are in the process of re-classification and digitization (in part). The leading agenceis date from the mid-I9th century. Here, we look primarily at the archives relating to the company or organisational history of these agencies, and less at those relating to the news-product or « copy ». This overview highlights common features and distinctive traits of what are sometimes, perhaps mistakenly, considered the first transnational media « actors ».
