Drawing from a comparative study of Elle and Marie Claire after 1968, the article questions the possible existence of a “feminist parenthesis” in some women’s magazine during the second wave of feminism. It argues that the social, political and commercial context unabled the two magazines promote women’s rights. Focusing on specific formats : The “Elle Encyclopedia” (1968-1970) and the “Women’s pages” in Marie Claire (1976-1990), the article unveils the material conditions of this political conversion which results in an “insertisation” of feminism.
