From 1892 to 1991, the Austrian socio-democrat party put up with a women’s press as long as it was under control and could attract woman voters and militants. In the twenties, Die Frau (The Woman) and Die Unzufriedene (The Malcontent) had a wide circulation and sometimes took feminist undertones whereas in the fifties and sixties, Die Frau appeared as a cog in the machine of the male leadership of the party.
