Traduction de Cécile Méadel.This essay investigates the process by which media audiences become media publics; it focuses on an analysis of responses to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s (FDR) fireside chats. Data includes 380 randomly selected letters written in response to the first ten chats delivered by FDR during his first term of office. We argue that FDR addressed listeners both as individuals and as members of a mass public. In response, listeners adopted a posture of both speaking for themselves and for a mass public. They felt they were part of a community — through conversations with family members, neighbors, and friends — through a process of on-going collective debate.
