Political ecology has long been weakened in France by the absence of a clear leadership. Nevertheless, since the late 1970’s, Brice Lalonde, thanks to an original communication strategy, has become the main leader of the French ecological movement, stirring together a fun and anti-establishment style with an acknowledged credibility. In 1988, he became the first ecologist minister in the government. But the strong divisions of French ecology and its rejection of leadership threatened his hegemony at the beginning of the 1990’s. Lately, his new political orientation definitively undermined his media exposure.
