Advertising alcohol. A century (1873-1998) of advertising wine and spirits in the French press

Le Temps des médias n°2, printemps 2004, p.99-114.

In France, advertising alcohol is increasingly tightly regulated. This article begins by examining the illustrations available to the very first advertisers, and moves on to monitor how advertising messages in the press, while controlled, sometimes followed the law and sometimes anticipated laws, rules and regulations so as to survive. The article also highlights the strategies devised by creative advertisers to attract readers by using ever-more subtle images, slogans and “concepts”. DrapeauFrancais
