Le Temps des médias n°2, printemps 2004, p.197-214This paper outlines of 2003-started research program headed “The Civilization of the Newspaper†. The result of collaboration between historians and literature scholars, it aims to consider the history of the nineteenth century French press of the new cultural and literary history. After a cursory overview from the viewpoint of the nineteenth century press historiography, it indicates what is meant by a cultural history (focused on the uses of the periodical and its part in the transformation of representations and social identities) and by a literary history (focused on the poetics of journalistic writing and its effects on the conceptions and practices of literature).
